Racehorse Reboot 8-Week Intensive: From Racehorse to Riding Horse
There is something incredibly rewarding about watching an off-the-track Thoroughbred or Standardbred transform into a calm, willing, confident riding horse.
Not because the horse has been "fixed."
Not because somebody found a magic technique.
But because somebody finally understood the horse in front of them and followed a thoughtful process that helped the horse transition from one career into another.
The reality is that racehorses are trained for a very specific job.
They are conditioned physically, mentally, and emotionally for life in a racing environment. They learn particular associations, develop particular movement patterns, and often carry both physical and behavioural baggage into their next chapter.
Yet many people bring these horses home expecting them to simply become riding horses.
When problems arise, owners often blame themselves or the horse.
In reality, many of these horses are simply struggling through a transition that has not been properly understood or supported.
That is why Isabelle Chandler and I created the Racehorse Reboot 8-Week Intensive.
Why We Created The Intensive
You can absolutely work through the Racehorse to Riding Horse program at your own pace.
Many people do.
However, we have consistently found that people make significantly more progress when they have structure, accountability, feedback, and a community of people working through the same process.
The Intensive provides exactly that.
For eight weeks, we work together inside the Racehorse Reboot Community Forum as participants move through the early stages of retraining their off-the-track Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds.
This is not simply a challenge.
It is a guided retraining process.
A process designed to help owners understand their horse, develop their own skills, and build the foundations that create safer, more confident and more enjoyable horses to ride.
More Than Groundwork
One of the biggest mistakes people make with off-the-track horses is rushing into riding before the horse truly understands the new expectations being placed upon them.
Another common mistake is remaining stuck on the ground without ever successfully transferring those skills into ridden work.
The goal of the Racehorse Reboot Intensive is to bridge that gap.
We begin by developing the key groundwork foundations that help un-train the racehorse and prepare the horse for their new role.
Through the groundwork process we develop:
focus
relaxation
emotional regulation
responsiveness
understanding
body control
confidence
Most importantly, we create clarity.
The horse begins to understand the new language and expectations of life beyond racing.
From there, we progressively transfer those qualities into ridden work.
The goal is not simply to have a horse that performs exercises.
The goal is to create a horse that carries the same calmness, willingness, understanding and confidence from the ground into the saddle.
When that happens, riding becomes significantly safer, softer and more enjoyable for both horse and rider.
Why Support Matters
Retraining an off-the-track horse can feel isolating.
Many owners find themselves questioning everything.
Am I doing the right thing?
Why is my horse reacting like this?
Is this normal?
Should I push forward or slow down?
This is where the Intensive becomes so valuable.
Each week participants receive:
Weekly live Zoom coaching calls
Clear guidance on what to focus on each week
Rapid feedback on video submissions
Support from experienced professionals
The opportunity to learn from other horses and owners progressing through the same process
One of the most powerful aspects of the Intensive is that participants do not just learn from their own horse.
They learn from everybody else's horses as well.
You begin to see patterns.
You learn to recognise common challenges.
You develop a deeper understanding of why horses respond the way they do.
This dramatically accelerates learning for both horse and human.
The Difference Between Training and Rebooting
We often talk about "retraining" off-the-track horses.
But before many horses can truly be retrained, they first need to be rebooted.
They need time to adjust.
Time to decompress.
Time to learn a different way of interacting with people and their environment.
Time to develop new physical and mental skills.
This is particularly important for horses that have recently left racing, but it is equally relevant for horses that have been retired for years and are still carrying many of the habits, tensions and associations developed during their racing careers.
The Intensive helps owners recognise what stage their horse is truly at and how to support them appropriately.
What We Hope To Achieve
By the end of the eight weeks, our goal is to help participants develop horses that are:
calmer
more focused
more confident
more responsive
safer to handle
more enjoyable to ride (if this is achieved in the timeframe)
Just as importantly, we aim to help owners feel more confident, capable and empowered in the decisions they make with their horses.
Because successful retraining is never just about the horse.
It is also about helping the person develop the understanding and skills needed to guide that horse through a successful transition.
DO I NEED SPECIAL FACILITIES?
A round yard is helpful but not essential. Alternatives are provided for people without access to one. The focus is on doing the best work possible with the facilities you have available.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. How often do I need to work with my horse?
Aim for around 30 minutes, 3 to 4 times per week to make steady progress during the four-week intensive.
2. What if I can’t work my horse that often?
That is completely fine. You can move through the material at your own pace. Support remains available inside the Racehorse Reboot Community Forum.
3. I’m going away and will miss a week. Is that a problem?
Not at all. You can catch up later and continue at your own pace. Simply post your updates in the appropriate thread in the app.
4. Can I join if my horse has soundness issues or an injury?
Yes. You are welcome to join and learn more about the transition from racing. However, your horse may not be able to participate in all aspects of the training if they are physically restricted.
